Anyone creating "mycelium paste" for 3D printing?

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get started on 3D printing with Mycelium (to be more accurate: a paste made out of fibres/substrates that is inoculated with Mycelium). It’s for a personal project, been curious on the topic for a while and would like to give it a go!

Currently unsure about the equipment needed to carry this out… Don’t have access to a lab and I feel like that might slow things down.

Thanks!

Great question! I was wondering the same thing a couple months back when working on a project using ceramic printing.

You should look into wood 3D printers, that could be a good starting point for then latter colonizing with mycelium to strengthen it,
or get one of those 3D pens, and try making a paste with, some pulp, some enrichment, maybe even a little wood glue so when it comes out of the nozzle its got some stick to it, than once it sets, rehydrate it so the mycelium can grow
I think they allready got some good pull to them or you could try blowing it through.

That sounds great! Thank you so much
The second idea is more along the lines of what I’m looking for. Do you think a bit of chopped/blended mushroom added into the paste will still grow afterwards if rehydrated?

Did you already had a look at this post? Robotic fabrication (KUKA Robot) of mycelium composites

I did! I found it very useful except I don’t understand exactly how the mycelium is inoculated into the paste. Is it just the white root bits, or can it be simply chopped up mushroom bits that get mixed in? I don’t know what’s necessary for it to grow onto the print afterwards.

my only concern is the heat at which those kind of printers print at.

However, now that I think about it, with ceramic extruders, we simply use the wet medium and layer that, then bisque, sand and finish and then finally glare and fire again

Not sure if this has been mentioned. But I worked with ceramic extruders.
The principle of those could apply here.
